The tools you use every day are important, and analog tools are especially valuable as they're designed with your experience in mind. Not just in how they look and feel, but also in their effectiveness to help you achieve your creative goals. With countless analog tools out there, every detail in a pencil is important, from the eraser to the graphite tip. That's especially true of the core, where small differences in the blend of graphite, clay, and wax create four distinct writing experiences.
Understanding the difference is one thing, but experiencing them is another. When you try them out, you can feel the difference and compare the characteristics of each Blackwing graphite core to find the one that works best for you. Personalizing your analog experience can help combat the ongoing challenge of screen overuse, because sometimes the best way to disconnect is to pick up something that doesn't require charging or a screen. It’s all about finding the right balance, which is why we offer various graphite types for you to choose from, all made from premium, timeless materials that date back to the 1930’s.
Each core contains different variations of graphite, clay, and wax. The four types of graphite pencils range from soft, balanced, firm, and extra-firm.
1. The first type is the Blackwing Matte pencil, which features a soft core. It creates the darkest and smoothest line that dynamically reflects the pressure applied.
2. Next is the Blackwing Pearl pencil, which has a well-balanced graphite core. It handles both writing and sketching effortlessly, and you can seamlessly transition between different creative tasks.
3. The third is the Blackwing 602 pencil, known for its firm core. Our all-time best seller has great point retention while being buttery smooth.
4. Finally, the Blackwing Natural pencil has an extra-firm graphite core. This pencil needs to be sharpened the least, meaning fewer interruptions, perfect for precise and detailed work.
To achieve the best results with the Blackwing Matte Pencil, start by building up your values from light to dark. Creating a value scale on a separate piece of paper is the best way to see the range of dark and light values. Seeing the range will help avoid overworking the paper and creating unwanted shiny spots in your drawings.
Use the Blackwing Pearl Pencil when you want to make a quick sketch. Its balanced core helps you keep consistent values and lets you write easily. The pencil works well for expressive, gestural strokes, making it good for both writing and drawing. The more uniform your strokes are, the easier it is to blend if you want to develop your drawing further.
Grab the Blackwing 602 Pencil when you need both smooth lines and longevity. Its firm core holds longer than both the soft and balanced cores. This graphite formula was crafted for speed, precision, and control, delivering on its promise of “Half the Pressure, Twice the Speed.” When drawing, you might want to grab your 602 for small, fine, detailed areas. The graphite is still “soft” enough to blend out.
Blackwing Natural Pencils feature extra-firm graphite, making them ideal for long-form writing since this graphite lasts longer. With the extra-firm formulation, you’ll find that you need to sharpen the pencil less frequently, helping you stay focused without distractions. Additionally, this type of graphite allows for fine details to be created in drawings.
Although these are our recommendations, there are no rules when it comes to which graphite to choose for your task. Feel each pencil and experiment to find what you like! Personalize your analog experience and not only be intentional with your tools, but also be present in the moment you are creating. The more you use the pencils, the more you will understand when to use them, no need to overthink the technical aspects of the pencils. There will be no distractions from the lead breaking or having to apply pressure to get a nice graphite line down. These four graphite pencils are made for you to serve as a reminder to slow down.
