How to Journal: 3 Steps to Start Journaling in 2026

How to Make Journaling a Daily Ritual

Happy 2026! Sadie here from Blackwing.

This year, I’ve committed to a daily journaling practice. 14 days in, it's feeling transformative.

What started as a goal has quickly become a cornerstone of my routine. Many people wonder how to make journaling a habit that actually sticks. So, I’m sharing my three-step framework for turning the intention to journal into a consistent, daily ritual.

Side Note: It’s easier than you think, especially when you have the right tools and a clear approach.

Step 1: Choose Your Journal, Define Your Intention

This isn't just about picking a pretty notebook—it's about aligning your tool with your purpose. Think about why you want to journal.

  • For daily reflection and memory keeping (like me): You might prefer a classic lined journal like the Blackwing Slate Notebook. The slate's durable hardcover and quality paper are perfect for everyday use without being too precious. Pair it with a firm (Blackwing 602) or extra-firm (Blackwing Natural) pencil. I prefer the Natural for journaling for the least sharpening!

  • For on-the-go thoughts and creative bursts: The Blackwing Memo Book is compact for your pocket, purse, backpack, etc. The small slate hardcover notebook is another option, which comes equipped with a pencil.

  • For detailed planning or elaborate sketching: You might lean towards a larger format or a dot-grid style journal that offers more flexibility, like the Large Slate Notebook.

Decorate it with stickers from your favorite coffee shop, travels, etc. The goal is to find a journal that invites you to open it.

Step 2: Pick Your Prompt (Or Just Start!)

One of the biggest hurdles is the blank page. But, you don't need a profound question every single time. My personal style is simple: I write the date at the top and start writing about my day, my feelings, or a memory that stands out.

Here are a few low-pressure ways to kickstart your entry:

  • The Daily Check-in: Simply write the date, and release what comes to mind.

  • The Memory Capsule: "One thing I want to remember from today is..."

  • The Highs & Lows: Jot down a '+' and '-' (or "pros" and "cons") to capture a high point and a challenge from your day.

  • Free Association: Don't censor yourself. Just let your thoughts flow onto the page. You'd be surprised what emerges.

The prompt isn't meant to constrain you; it’s a gentle nudge to get thoughts flowing.

Step 3: Stay Consistent. Make It Convenient.

This is the non-negotiable step for ritualizing anything. The key to consistency is convenience. If your journal is buried in a drawer, you’re less likely to use it.

My secret? A hardcover journal, a graphite pencil, and a sharpener live on my nightstand.

That prime real estate means no excuses, no searching, just a quick reach. Even on the longest days, dedicating a few minutes before bed or first thing in the morning makes a huge difference.

  • Create a Journaling Station: Whether it’s your nightstand, a corner of your desk, or a specific spot in your living room, make sure your journal and writing tools are always visible and easily accessible.

  • Time Block (Even 5 Minutes): You don't need an hour. Five to ten minutes can be incredibly powerful.

  • Be Kind to Yourself: If you miss a day, don't give up! Pick it up again tomorrow. Progress, not perfection, is the goal

Journaling is a powerful practice for self-reflection, stress reduction, and creativity. With the right tools and a consistent approach, it can transform your daily life.
